Vault home

The vault home is the place where the vault engine stores and serves durable content. It is separate from Cloud login.

Mode Vault home Operator
Local-only daemon Your machine You
Self-hosted full experience Your machine You
Hosted full experience KB-1 hosted environment KB-1

The same Cloud login can route to different vault homes depending on how the organization’s daemon is configured.

A daemon-owned vault lives under the daemon state directory:

$KB1_HOME/vaults/<vault-id>/

That folder contains Markdown, attachments, vault metadata, and the .kb1 identity directory. It is the thing you back up, inspect, copy, and restore.

In self-hosted full experience, Cloud stores account, organization, routing, and access-control records. The daemon remains responsible for content reads and writes.

In Hosted full experience, KB-1 operates the daemon and vault home, so Hosted content custody is part of the Cloud service.
